Ads Be Gone

I discovered on the last post that Blogger has decided to stop putting ads on its hosted blogs. In its place (as you can see above) is what they call the NavBar. Among other things, it's got a search field that can supposedly search this site for documents. I don't know why you would, and it's not working for me right now anyway, but it's there. So when I can get it to work, you can search my site. If you dare...

Blogger posted a Google link in their article about the NavBar so that people can submit their blogs for indexing. Seeing that link reminded me of some of the gripes people have made in the past about blogs cluttering up search engines, and I couldn't help but wonder if the NavBar has yet another unstated use: another method/means by which Google attempts to contain the 'noise' from blogs.

I found that link just after submitting my post, so it's working now.

In checking the code, I also noticed that not only could I work with the CSS in the NavBar (which led to my "skin the NavBar" comment in the BlogSkins forum), but it also validates! I griped to them about the invalid ad code six months ago, they told me to be patient, and there we go. I am much happier with Blogger now.

I didn't think about Google using the NavBar as a "corraling" tool and I think you make a good point. I don't think that blogs are cluttering up search engines though. It might give people some incentive to pay attention to standards if they realize the reason the blogs are getting higher Google ranks are simply because they're coded better.
